For this brief my group decided on remaking the Cottingley Fairy Hoax. We aimed to push this idea into a modern urban environment and try to recreate the hoax ourselves by blaming our actions on fairies. I had a lot of fun on this module, creating a whimsical storyline and getting to work with my peers!
From the beginning I knew my group would work well together having worked on a zine last year, so I felt that we were a step up on knowing each other’s habits and work mentality. Our group was really successful in acting as a heterarchical collective, by sharing the workload and idea generation; and taking the collaborative aspects very seriously by all contributing to multiple things at the same time.
Originally we intended on making our own fairies but we then realised that cohesion was something we valued highly and it would be better to make them have a consistent style. So we separated the tasks out in line with our strengths, this is how I ended up painting them! I enjoyed this step a lot as I felt like I was able to give them all their own personalities. Working on such a small scale was new to me so I have definitely acquired a new skill, as well as becoming a hairdresser by making fun, punk styles out of wool .This method worked well together with our limited colour palette in giving our exhibition a strong style that made it seem like we were one person similar to the collective La Gun.
In this module I envisioned myself as a professional, this is why the aspect of promotion of our collective and belief in our hoax through instagram and merch making was so important. I made and edited reels, gifs and formatted teasers in order to do so. I also made a lot of merchandise, designing the back of our screenprinted T-shirts and making postcards.
Overall this module was helpful in gaining insight to the collaborative professional world and got me thinking about how work can be presented in and outside of exhibition spaces. Looking back we could have worked more to develop the style of the fairies as we kind of figured it out as we went along. I also think that we could have done more tasks in Bristol and blamed the fairies, to strengthen the believability of the hoax.
