GROUP WORK!

THE HOKEY FOLKY COLLECTIVE

I formed my group with Izzy Xena and Molly, we have previously worked together on the visual essay module last year so I knew that we would make a great team!

The Cottingley Fairies - Historic UK

We decided on recreating the Cottingley Fairies Hoax as our artefact at this stage we didn't quite know where to take it- we just knew that our aims would to be to make a new version of the hoax and to bring back the 'whimsy' and hope that the original photo created.

INITIAL BITS

^ Notes from second meeting
We decided that we wanted to remake the fairies to photograph for our own hoax, but they would be Bristol/city themed instead of the original classic woodland fairies, this way they fit into their urban environments, we also agreed that our project was starting to lean more towards a homage.

We also liked the idea of creating merch for our hoax in order to spread the belief to a wider audience- we planned to create stickers to place around Bristol, make badges and make some T-shirts to wear.
This week I focused on creating stickers in a graffiti style which contrast the typical fairy vibe:

^My original proposal sketch for our space
For our exhibition we like the idea of an interactive photo opportunity placing fairies in a city scene.

On our next meeting I brought up some questions on how to divide the tasks up but in a way that we have a consistent visual style throughout, originally we were all going to attempt to make our own fairies, but I suggested that we worked on them together in order for them to appear more similar. Molly was to make the bodies, Izzy to design the heads, Me to paint and decorate and Xena to add accessories and make the wings.

^ We also visited the scrap store to collect bits and bobs we could use to decorate!

This week we also had a tutorial with Phil where he suggested we give the fairies more of a purpose in order to make the hoax seem more real, we decided that they would become cleaning fairies, and we would clean parts of Bristol and say it was the fairies who did it. Our plan was now to secretly clean areas of Bristol take photos of our constructed fairies and leave behind "evidence" that they were there and are actually real. This being the stickers and possibly some fairy doors. This also really worked with our idea of having the fairies displayed in a "dirty" area as it makes it look like they are in the process of cleaning.

As I had to wait for Izzy and Molly to complete some fairies to start painting I worked on some other things in the meantime.
^For the instagram and promotion of our collective I did a little meet the collective post of us as cleaner fairies.

^ I also made fairy doors to put in the areas we clean/ our photoshoots

I also added another post to our instagram with the progress photos I took.

FAIRY PAINTING!

^Sketchbook ideas/plans

This is what the base of the fairies I received from Molly and Izzy looked like before I started painting.

I knew that I wanted to keep them punk to match with the graffiti theme and the piercings Izzy added to their faces, so I experimented with making alt hair styles with needle felting wool, giving one of them graffiti style tattoos and giving them interesting makeup. At this point we new our set would consist of a mostly pink and black colour scheme so I decided to make them all greeny-blue in order to stand out. I tried to make it so that they all were slightly different and had their own characters but still looked like a group. I had a lot of fun with this and even made some accessories myself before giving them to Xena for the finishing touches.

SPRAY PAINTING BITS

After acquiring a wheelie bin and some traffic cones to buff up our city set we set off to Bower Ashton to Spray paint. The journey was quite funny to me as we literally had to roll a bin down the streets for half an hour so I made another instagram post documenting it (Izzy made the song choice!)
We made some stencils to assist with the decoration of the bins, I made the fairies and the whimsy ones. We also spray painted the rubbish in block colours to help give our set a more stylised look.

^ Me and Molly returned to add more tags and bits a few days later

PHOTOS!

We put up our stickers around Bristol City Center and Hotwells and took pictures of them- I edited them all into individual GIFs for each person to add the instagram! I though this not only looked cool but was a good way of promoting the collective and hoax not only on the streets but online too!
^Here's my Stickers as a Gif the others I edited are on the Instagram!

To lean more into remaking the photo element of our artefact we thought it would be good to take our now completed fairies into the wild and get some snaps!

^Fairy Door Photos!

I decided that we could use these to make more merch, so made some postcards from them.

OTHER BITS

We wanted to have some street posters/advertisements on the wall behind for extra set design so here is my attempt at some, one based on one of the characters aptly holding some fairy liquid and the other of one posing, the plan is to graffiti on top!

We also wanted to add a touch more whimsy to the set so we decided on adding some vines which often remind me of a mystical setting and would also work as a way to tie in the greeny colour scheme of the fairies to the bins and cones, so I volunteered to crochet a very long vine!

FINAL TUTORIAl REVIEW SHEET

To finish I wrote up, with the help of Molly, our last tutorial sheet and I drew a little concept sketch on what we are planning our space to look like.
